Continuous Monitoring

Continuous monitoring is the automated, ongoing collection and analysis of data from applications, infrastructure, networks and security controls, so teams catch performance problems, failures and threats as they happen instead of in periodic reviews.

The term is used in two related ways. In DevOps, continuous monitoring is the stage of the delivery loop that follows deployment: production data feeds back into planning and development. In security and compliance, for example in NIST SP 800-137 and FedRAMP, it means keeping an ongoing view of security controls, vulnerabilities and threats instead of relying on a yearly audit. Both share one idea: watch all the time, automatically, and act on what you find.

What continuous monitoring covers

  • Applications: response times, error rates, throughput, exceptions and slow database queries.
  • Infrastructure: servers, containers and cloud resources, including CPU, memory, disk and network.
  • End users: real page loads in browsers, plus synthetic checks of key endpoints and journeys.
  • Logs and events: application, system and audit logs.
  • Security and compliance: configuration changes, access, vulnerabilities and suspicious activity.

How to put it in place

  1. Decide what matters. List the critical services and user journeys, and the signals that show they are healthy. Service level objectives make this concrete.
  2. Instrument. Install agents or OpenTelemetry SDKs, ship logs centrally and add uptime checks for public endpoints.
  3. Alert on symptoms. Page people for what users feel, such as errors and latency, and route alerts to the team that owns the service. Tune thresholds so alerts stay rare enough to be taken seriously.
  4. Close the loop. Review dashboards after releases and incidents, and feed what you learn back into the backlog.

Benefits

  • Problems are found sooner and fixed faster, which lowers MTTR.
  • Releases are safer, because you can compare behavior before and after each deploy.
  • Audits are easier, because evidence is collected continuously rather than gathered by hand.
  • Capacity problems show up as trends before they become outages.

Continuous monitoring with Atatus

Atatus covers the operational side in one platform: APM and real user monitoring for applications, infrastructure and log monitoring, uptime checks, and alerting that groups related issues into one incident and routes it to Slack, PagerDuty, email and other channels. On the security side, SIEM runs detection rules mapped to MITRE ATT&CK and produces compliance reports.
